Humans Need Not Apply - What jobs will students of today do?

This past January, the  Economist  set off alarm bells when it noted in a story on the future of work that  47 percent of jobs  were at risk of becoming automated in the next two decades. Telemarketers. Retail salespeople. Commercial pilots. Economists. Even actors and editors. Like it or not, the robots are coming, and sooner or later they’ll probably come for your job. “ Humans Need Not Apply ,” a new mini-documentary from C.G.P. Grey, tackles just how wide-ranging the repercussions of automation could be in the labor market going forward. “This stuff isn’t science fiction,” the narrator explains in a staccato, robot-esque tone. “The robots are here right now. There is a terrifying amount of working automation in labs and warehouses around the world.” That includes Google’s  self-driving cars  and bots trading on the New York Stock Exchange, as well as computers writing  fan fiction  and  composing classical music . htt...

How to print on the school network

Image
1. You will need to go to the IT Support room and ask the technicians to install the drivers for the printers. The printers will all already be configured, so you may now print documents. 2. Make sure you are connected to the bis-users network since the printers communicate with your computer over our intranet, or else your printout won't go out. 3. When printing a document, select the printer named "RicohB&W" to print in black and white or the printer named "Ricoh Colour" to print in colour.   There is a black and white printer near the Teacher/Guest bathrooms on each floor (except for the first floor) as well as one near the IB Common Room and one in the Library. The colour printer is located right outside of room 216. There is also a black and white and a colour printer in the Photocopy Room, room 107. 4. Once you are at a printer, tap the "Username" field and enter your school e-mail (omitting the "@bisphuket.ac.th" p...

Configuring printing settings

Image
Press Cmd+P (Ctrl+P if you are using Windows or some Linux distributions). This will usually open a dialogue box that may look like the following: The pictured dialogue (and the one below) will be continually referred to throughout the tutorial. Make sure you have selected either "RicohB&W" or "Ricoh Colour" (or some variation thereof) from the menu. Another dialogue box will appear. In this one, you can configure various settings that determine how your document is printed out.   Opening the "Orientation" menu will give you the choice to print your printout in portrait or landscape orientation. Opening the "Duplex"  menu gives you the options of Off Open to Left Open to Top Booklet However, in most instances of printing, only the Off and Open to Left settings are relevant, so these will be covered. Open to Left is the default setting chosen when the printer drivers are installed. Documents are printed out as double...

Google Docs tutorial

Image
Google Docs Tutorial This tutorial is on Google Docs. It covers the basic layout and and functions of Google Docs. It will also go through some of the settings and tools available. First we have the title of the document. This is where we would put our title, though this may seem obvious forgetting to do so will make it harder to find your documents once saved in Google Drive. Use Titles that are clear when you or a collaborator search for the document. This is the Task Bar just underneath the title of the document it has 9 categories of tabs. First of all there is the File tab it is where you will find the Save, New, Open, Bin, Move and Print buttons. The Save button simply saves your document however this is unneeded as Google docs does this automatically for you, the New button opens a new document, Open allows you to open previously saved documents. The bin button allows you to trash the document that you are currently viewing. The move button allows you to...

Email Signatures

Image
All users of BISP should add a signature to their school accounts (@bisphuket.ac.th) in the following format: Line 1*: preferred sign off followed by a blank line Line 2 (normal font): User's  full name, where appropriate a nickname may be included in brackets. Line 3 (italic font): User's job title, where appropriate an extension number may be added in brackets. *Users are welcome to use a sign off of their choice e.g. best regards, yours sincerely,... Example: Best regards, Nigel Wheeler ICT Director It is important that italics are used in the second line, to ensure this it is best to copy and paste the text into  the signature space. Note: The school footer information is then added to ALL emails sent to external email addresses. This does not appear on the copy stored in sent. Changing Language in Gmail

Image
Google Language Settings If you open your Gmail (or school email) and the language is in Thai, you will need to change the language settings for your account to English. This is a simple procedure, but a challenge for non-Thai speakers as all the menus will be in Thai. Language is a user controlled setting, the video below shows you how to change the setting: Click on your Avatar or picture in the top right corner Click on the left hand link under your email address (to go to account) Select the third tab (language settings) Change the top box to English Click in the pop-up to reload Screen should now be in English and you can select the appropriate regional variant of English. At this point I recommend you log out of Google and restart your browser to check that the setting has fully changed. The video (which has no sound) below shows those steps Alternative approach follow these instructions from Google  https://support.google.com/mail/answer/6...
